Legendary Ladies of Lincoln: Ouida Spyre Tolbert

Ouida Tolbert began her career at Lincoln University in 1950 as a Supervisory teacher of English, French, Speech, and Drama in the Laboratory High School and as an Associate Professor in the Department of Education. She retired from Lincoln as an Associate Professor of English in 1993. Tolbert was a mentor, role model, and life-long educator. Her dedication to pedagogy and passionate attitude touched many of her students’ and colleagues’ lives. She still contributes to the educating community today.

Legendary Ladies of Lincoln: Rosemary Hearn

Dr. Rosemary Hearn is a native of Indianapolis, Indiana. She is a graduate of Howard University, where she earned the Bachelor of Arts degree in English. After Howard, she returned to Indiana to enroll in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at Indiana University, Bloomington, where she earned her masters and doctorate in English. Upon receipt of her master’s degree in 1958, Dr. Hearn was appointed to the faculty of Lincoln University and remained at Lincoln for forty-two years, serving the university in a number of positions. While at Lincoln, Dr. Hearn served on a number of state and national committees, including the Executive Committee of the Mid-Missouri Associated Colleges and Universities and the Missouri State Planning Committee of the American Council on Higher Education. Upon her retirement from Lincoln University, Dr. Hearn returned to Indiana and made her home in Carmel, just outside of her native Indianapolis.

Legendary Ladies of Lincoln: Yvonne S. Wilson

Yvonne S. Wilson is a woman of achievement, accomplishment, and ambition. A native of Kansas City, MO, Ms. Wilson enrolled in Lincoln University and graduated in 1950 with a Bachelors degree in Education. She then earned a Masters in Sociology from the University of Missouri-Kansas City. She later went on to become a teacher, principal and systems director in the Kansas City School District. Ms. Wilson’s many accomplishments include her positions as the President of Lincoln University Board of Curators and the first African American President of the MO Association of School Principals. Ms. Wilson also served the Kansas City area in the Missouri State General Assembly; first as a Representative in the Missouri House and then as a State Senator. Ms. Wilson retired from public life in 2012. She resides with her family in Kansas City.

Legendary Ladies of Lincoln: Zelma Lloyd Frank

As the wife of Lincoln University President, Dr. James Frank, Dr. Zelma Lloyd Frank, First Lady of Lincoln, was very active in the Jefferson City community and received both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Lincoln University. She received her Doctorate in Education at The University of Missouri-Columbia. Dr. Frank is a member of Phi Delta Kappa, Kappa Delta Pi, and the International and State Association for Children with Learning Disabilities. She was a teaching and reading assistant for elementary students in Missouri, Massachusetts, and New York. She was very active with the Capital City Council on the Arts, Meals on Wheels, St. Mary’s Health Center Auxiliary, and the local High School PTA. She resides in Atlanta, Georgia.
